UK Truck Registrations Rise

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has highlighted a significant uptick in the demand for new trucks in the UK for the second consecutive year, underscoring a move towards more sustainable business practices. In 2023, the sector saw a 13.5% increase in registrations, reaching 46,227 units, the highest figure since 2019. The growth spans across both rigid and articulated trucks, with a noteworthy tripling in zero-emission HGV registrations. Despite this, such vehicles still only account for 0.5% of the market. The industry is advocating for a cohesive national strategy to foster confidence in electric and hydrogen trucks, pinpointing the critical need for expanded public and depot charging infrastructure. This call to action aims to support the UK’s ambitions to reduce truck emissions by 2035, emphasizing the pivotal role of government initiatives in ensuring a successful transition to greener energy sources.
